Manual lymphatic drainage

What is lymphatic drainage and why is it recommended after your surgery?

Lymphatic drainage is a gentle massage method used after certain surgical procedures, such as knee replacements, to promote optimal recovery. After surgery, the body often reacts with fluid buildup and swelling, caused by tissue inflammation. This specific massage helps reduce this swelling by stimulating the body's natural drainage system, allowing excess fluid to be eliminated more quickly and reducing pain.

What are the benefits of lymphatic drainage?

Reduction of swelling (post-operative edema) : After knee surgery, it is common to see significant swelling in the joint due to inflammation and fluid buildup in the tissues. Lymphatic drainage helps reduce this swelling by stimulating the lymphatic system to drain these fluids, speeding up recovery.

Decrease in pain : Edema and inflammation around the knee can increase pressure on nerves, leading to pain. By reducing swelling, lymphatic drainage can help relieve pain and improve post-operative comfort.

Improved mobility : A swollen knee is often stiffer and less mobile. Lymphatic drainage promotes better mobility by reducing fluid buildup, allowing for more effective and faster rehabilitation after surgery.

Prevention of complications : After knee surgery, there is a risk of developing fibrosis or adhesions in the scar tissue, which can restrict mobility and lead to chronic pain. Lymphatic drainage helps prevent these complications by promoting smoother tissue healing.

Improved healing : By facilitating lymphatic circulation, drainage helps deliver essential nutrients and remove waste and toxins, allowing for faster and cleaner healing of the surgical wound.

Compression bandages

Compression bandages may be offered to you after knee surgery to promote optimal recovery and reduce post-operative complications. They play a key role in managing inflammation and swelling that occurs after surgery, particularly around the joints. These bandages apply controlled pressure to the operated area, offering several benefits to patients.

Benefits of bandages after knee replacement:

  • Reduced swelling : Compression bandages help prevent excessive fluid buildup in tissues, reducing edema and promoting greater patient comfort.
  • Joint stabilization : After surgery, the knee may be unstable due to tissue healing. Bandages provide additional support, helping to hold the joint in place while allowing controlled mobility.
  • Improved traffic flow : By lightly compressing tissues, bandages promote better blood circulation, which can speed up the healing process by delivering needed nutrients to scar tissue.
  • Prevention of hematomas : Compression also helps reduce minor internal bleeding that can cause bruising after surgery.
  • Comfort and protection : Bandages also protect the operated area from external irritation, thus limiting the risk of infection and improving the overall comfort of the patient.
